Android TV Setup Guide: Step by Step for First-Time Users

Setting up a new Android TV takes about ten minutes. This step-by-step guide walks first-time users through the whole process — from the first power-on to installing your first app — so you can get straight to watching.

Before you start

Have these ready: your Wi-Fi password (or an Ethernet cable), your Google account details, and two AAA batteries if your remote needs them. If your TV already runs Android TV, you can skip plugging in a separate device.

Step 1 — Power on and choose your language

Plug in the device (or turn on the TV) and select your language and region when prompted. The remote usually pairs automatically at this point; if not, we cover pairing below.

Step 2 — Connect to the internet

Go to Settings > Network & Internet. For the steadiest streaming — especially live TV and sports — use a wired Ethernet connection. Otherwise select your Wi-Fi network and enter the password with the on-screen keyboard.

Step 3 — Sign in with your Google account

Open Settings > Accounts & sign-in > Add account and enter your email and password. You can also sign in from your phone when prompted, which is faster than typing. Signing in unlocks the Play Store and personalised recommendations.

Step 4 — Pair your remote and accessories

Under Settings > Remotes & accessories, the device scans for Bluetooth remotes, game controllers and headphones. Hold the pairing button on the accessory until it appears, then select it.

Step 5 — Name your device

In Settings > Device Preferences > About > Device name, give it a clear name (e.g. "Living Room TV"). This makes it easy to pick when you cast from your phone.
